AV Archives Night and Tweetup

Join us Wednesday, August 13th at the Black Cat for the officially unofficial SAA14 1st Annual AV Archives Night and concurrent Tweetup. AV Archives Night party is a screening/listening party sponsored and arranged by AVPreserve to highlight audiovisual collections in the DC area and the great work archivists do. We already have submissions from the University of Maryland, Archives of American Art, Veterans’ Oral History Project, and the National Archives, with more coming in. The programing will showcase early broadcast history, important oral history work, performing arts, unique historical footage of the region, and folklife music from across the globe. Highlights to pique your interest include footage of activities of US Army soldiers during the Baltimore Riot of 1968, color footage of Nurses of the 51st field hospital during WWII, and DJ patter from WMUC’s Yesternow from the 1970s. The event is free and open to anyone (do not need to be attending SAA) and will take place in the Backstage Concert Room at the Black Cat DC. Find location details at http://www.blackcatdc.com/shows/archives.html

We are also arranging a Tweetup to take place simultaneously at the Black Cat. The Red Room Bar is directly next to the Backstage and will provide a place for Tweeples to gather and talk outside of the screening. The Black Cat frequently runs all-ages shows, so there should be non-alcohol options (not sure if they still serve Jolt Cola, but we can dream). Come meet your Twitter buddies in person and don’t worry about how many characters you’re using.

Doors open at 8:00 for the AV Archives Night. Screening will start closer to 9:00 to avoid conflicting too much with the New Member reception. It will be a rolling, casual program, so easy to drop in and out of. Tweetup checkin will be available at 8:00 as well. Please RSVP for the Tweetup at twvt.us/saa14 by August 8th so we can give the venue a heads up.

Also remember that the Black Cat is just a couple of blocks from Ben’s Chili Bowl, so stop by after History & Half Smokes if you’re in the area. We’ll arrange a rideshare list to post and help people get home or back to hotels in the evening. And if we can swing it we’ll try to keep the screening room until last call and do a little dancing to bring in the conference right. Hope to see you there.
